RUG INFORMATION:
Semi-Antique Ali Hajioglu Hereke rug in excellent condition
This unique Hereke rug is a very hard to find Hereke rug from the Ali Hajioglu workshop with a very fine 14/14 quality ~1200+ kpsi and a great example of the influence that the Persian rug weavers had on the Turkish rug weaving culture during the early part.
This Hereke piece has a hidden feature that very few know about that sets the Ali Hajioglu workshop apart from most other Hereke weavers. Below is a video that I made for our YouTube channel in which I showcase some of the very old workshops that were created at the end of the Ottoman empire. Among them is the workshop founded by Ali Hajioglu who was trained in the Imperial Hereke manufacture by Persian rug weavers who were employed to teach the local Turkish rug weavers.
Link between this Hereke and Persian rugs:
If you look closely at the pictures of the fringes, you can see how there is a very suttle difference between the colors of the fringes and you will see a striped pattern. This is a Persian rug weaving tradition of the old and at times you will see it in the back of Isfahan rugs, where every 10cm a colored thread is woven and it is known as a Reft. In the old days, the weavers would got paid when a Reft was completed and it became like a measuring guide. It appears that this old weaving technique was taught by some of the Persian rug weavers who were employed at the Imperial workshop as the Ali Hajioglu pieces are known for this feature, which makes them very collectable amongst those of us who are passionate about Hereke rugs.
Like most workshops, the Ali Hajioglu shop closed its doors many years ago and was unfortunately not a huge outfit. As a result, there are not a whole lot of their rugs to be found and most have no idea about their speacial nature. Given that this piece is a 14/14 quality and has about ~1200+kpsi, it was owned by a collector who treated it like an artpiece as it has no wear or repairs. We estimate that this piece is about 70 years old, but it could be older due to the signature style, which are found on both sides of the rug.
IMPORTANT:
Info about very old Hereke rugs and the workshops
Due to the large number of inquiries I receive about genuine and fake Hereke rugs and the misinformation that are being peddled by online and rug store retailers, I have created my own YouTube channel where I offer factual information for you like the video below that is about the older Hereke workshops. You can see the video if you view this rug page on a laptop or desktop.
If you have a passion for silk Hereke rugs, please watch this video in which I showcase several workshops that are direct off-springs of the Imperial Hereke manufacture created by Sultan Abdülmecid I. Note: There are many more videos about the Turkish Hereke rugs in our channel and throughout our website. The Ali Hajioglu workshop was one of the original workshops and in this video I will showcase several of them.
