RUG INFORMATION:
Amazing 20/20 quality Turkish Hereke rug with ~2500 kpsi.
This pictorial rare pure silk Turkish Hereke artpiece with ~2500 kpsi and a 20/20 quality is NOT a Chinese copy and is one of several ultra fine and rare Turkish artpieces that we are fortunate enough to be able to offer.
The condition of this ultra fine Hereke is outstanding and the 20/20 quality refers to the fact that it features an amazing 20 knots per centimeter, which translates to about 4 million knots per square meter or about 2500 kpsi. These type of Hereke rugs are some of the most expensive and rarest of handmade rugs in the world due to their extreme high cost and to give you an idea, imagine a Turkish master weaver making the rug while looking through a magnifying glass in order to make sure that each knot is of the same thickness, quality and strength. Based on us having seen these rugs being made, we estimate about 5-8 seconds for each knot and if you do the math, you can see that even a small rug like this one would take about a year to make.
It is due to the extreme high labor costs that most 20/20 Turkish Hereke rugs like this one are of a small size as larger pieces would simply to too expensive and virtually impossible to make. Also, with the influx of Chinese imitation rugs that have flooded the Turkish market since the 80's and the rise in labor cost, the weaving of these extremely fine Hereke rugs have become all but extinct. This pictorial Hereke silk rug depicting the famous biblical Last Supper story was purchased from a collector who was the original buyer.
