RUG INFORMATION:
Amazing genuine Iktan Hereke rug with a stunning 20/20 quality, which translates to about ~2500 kpsi!!
This genuine Turkish silk Hereke rug from the Iktan workshop is one of only a few other extremely fine 20/20 quality pieces that we are proud to offer and is a great artpiece with a rich history. The Iktan workshop was a very small family business that like so many other Hereke weavers fell victim to the influx of the imitation Chinese silk rugs that flooded the rug markets several decades ago and was also closely associated with the Ozipek weavers.
As we have learned, the Iktan workshop was a small rug weaving family that used to be associated with the Ozipek weavers, which is why they were able to weave rugs that featured designs like in this piece that were pioneered by the Ozipek weavers. The pictorial design of this over-the-top quality Hereke rug is a variation of the famous Sad Autumn design that was first by the Ozipek weavers and if you look at our galleries, you will see that we often offer Ozipek pieces similar to this one in various sizes and qualities. What sets the Iktan Hereke rugs aside like in this piece is they they tend to be a mirror reflection of the Ozipek pieces and often include very small changes to make them stand apart. If you were to look closely at some of the Ozipek pieces and compare it to this piece, you will see that the tree and birds are opposite and there are a few very small differences in the designs.
The older Hereke rugs have become very sought after as the Turkish Hereke weaving community has all but collapsed thanks to the influx of the mass produced Chinese copies. The Iktan workshop is a perfect example of how the Turkish rug weavers were completely abandoned by their government and got decimated like so many other famous workshops like the Ozipek, G&K and Derin. Based on our experience and knowledge, it dates back to around 1970's and since it was kept by the original as a decor and artpiece due to its amazing 20/20 quality with about 2500 kpsi, it is like new and in flawless condition. The main black background color is great in bringing out the various details in the design and you can see the patina kicking in as well. Also, as is customary with the genuine Iktan Hereke rugs, the workshop signature is found in the top center of the border in the rug.
