Quality Service Uniqueness Value
Large square Persian Nain rug with a very high 6-lah quality and about 625 kpsi. These type of high end Nain Persian carpets are very popular with my clients and are great examples of what high end oriental rugs should look and feel like. Most high end Nain Persian rugs feature very traditional designs and even though the majority of the Nain oriental carpets are of a much lower quality, it is these high quality Nain Persian rugs, that has given the name the respect it rightfully deserves. Large rare pure silk Qom Persian rug with a geometric design called Gonbad or Gonbardeh, which is very rare in oriental carpets. My Qom silk oriental rugs are very popular with my clients due to their uniqueness and Persian carpets like this Qum rug are truly showpieces. Designed as a showpiece, silk Persian carpets have become very popular, but are difficult to make due to their extremely quality. Large round Tabriz oriental rug with a geometric design called Gombad or Gombardeh, which is among my most popular designs in Persian carpets. It is thanks to my family connections with many of the weavers in Tabriz that I am able to even get these type of Persian rugs and they are very fine and unique Tabriz carpets. Many of the oriental carpets have sold very quickly, and even though the vast majority of large round Persian rugs are around 7' in diameter, I am still able to offer some like this larger 8' Tabriz oriental carpet and I have even offered some in the 10' range as well, which are some of the most spectacular Persian rugs you will ever see. The design in the oversize room size Persian Tabriz rug is called Gonbad Faraji, which is extremely hard to find in Oriental carpets. Due to my direct family connections, I am able to purchase some of these rare Tabriz oriental rugs and they are very popular with my clients. Designed as a showpiece, these Tabriz carpets tend to be made of a very high quality and are great examples of what fine oriental rugs should look and feel like.

Sample of Tabriz Persian rug Designs, Part 1
Tabriz "Mahi" rugs

Dear visitor,

I have added these pages to my website to show you some of the common designs in Tabriz Persian rugs.
Amongst the most popular designs is the "Mahi" pattern, which is also known as the fish design.  The most common ones are the standard sized Tabriz rugs with a medallion and the main colors are typically beige, navy blue, and 3 shades of red (burgundy, cherry, and rose).

Large Persian Mahi rug with a burgundy color suitable for heavy traffic areas like dining rooms and family rooms.Medium sized Oriental Mahi rug with a beige main colorLong dark navy blue Tabriz Mahi rug runner designed for long hallways and also for steps.

The examples above are that of the most common pattern in Tabriz Mahi rugs. The quality of these type of Persian rugs can very from 30 Raj(~80 kpsi) to 80 Raj (600 kpsi+), although it is very rare to find them above 50 raj due to the high cost and a lack of demand.  Most of them are in fact in the lower quality range of 30-40 raj and the high end Mahi rugs are typically found in the 50 raj quality, which has about 350 kpsi.  Some retailers like to exaggerate the knot count on their rugs a bit and claim that theirs have 400 kpsi, but I have learned over the years that this is simply not true.  If you are looking at purchasing one, I have added a link to a buying guide for Persian rugs in my homepage and you will find some helpful information that will explain how you can actually count the knots yourself.
As you can see in the pictures above, the Mahi design is a fairly busy design and many buyers like to place them in heavy traffic areas such as dining rooms and hallways.  I have one in my dining room and they are great because the design hides just about any type of spill or accident.  We have spilled red wine on ours and thanks the the burgundy color of the Mahi carpet and the design, the stain literally disappeared.  The other reason for their popularity is the design itself and the way it blend in with the surroundings.  Some Persian carpet designs are very "loud" due to the choice of colors or shape, but the Mahi rugs are typically very quiet that blend in with the decor of the room and act as an accent, rather than a showpiece.  As you can imagine, I have several Tabriz carpets in my home and the Mahi rugs are very suited for their purpose.
Now, there are also a few Tabriz Mahi rugs that are very unusual due to a unique shape or color and those are my personal favorites, because I always like to offer rugs that you would not expect to see.  So below you will find Mahi carpets from my present and past collection that I think are truly showpieces.

Round Tabriz Mahi Persian rug from 2002. This round Mahi rug features a very unique design and color combination. In fact, round Mahi rugs are extremely rare and it is only through my familys direct contact with the weavers that I am able to offer these rare Persian rugs. This Mahi Tabriz rug features a new design and was created in 2006 by the Pirouzian family, one the best known Mahi weavers in all of Iran. In 2006, the Pirouzian family introduced their version own a brand new style of Mahi rugs with this stripped pattern, which is very different from the design of other Persian rugs. Small Mahi Twin rugs with a very unique design. Typically, Mahi rugs do not feature a solid area and this combination is very rare and sought-after. One of the most unusual colors that I have seen so far in Mahi Oriental rugs is this turquious blue piece and I have not been able to find one since. Another round Mahi rug with a different pattern than the other one. These round Oriental Mahi rugs are very popular with my clients, who are looking for unique and fine Persian rugs. This Mahi rug runner was also made by the Pirouzian family and it is a slight variation of the new Mahi rug design.

I hope that you have enjoyed this article about the Tabriz Mahi carpets and feel free to look at my other featured rug designs and my website.  As always, I enjoy hearing my visitor's thoughts and experiences, so drop me a line or two if you like.

Take care,

Mike Panah
