GUIDE TO BUYING PERSIAN RUGS
Persian Rug Information, History,& Pictures

Quality Service Uniqueness Value
Pure silk Qom Persian carpet with a hunting scene design, which is a classic example of Qom picture oriental rug. Amongst the finest carpets are the Qom Persian rugs and I am very particular about the ones that I offer. My pictorial Oriental carpets have been very popular with my clients and they can vary from very small rugs to very large pieces. All genuine Qom Oriental rugs are made using real silk and to find a Qom Persian carpet hanging on a wall or even framed is quiet common. Large round Tabriz Persian rugs with a metal foundation, which is very rare in Oriental carpets. These metal round Persian carpets are among my most popular Oriental rugs and they often sell within a few short weeks or months. Designed to be showpieces, Tabriz Persian rugs like this oriental carpet will hold their value and I often sell them to other oriental rug sellers. Star-shaped Tabriz Persian carpet and one of my most unusual oriental rugs in my collection. Due to my family's direct connection with many of the Persian rug weavers in Tabriz, I am able to offer rare oriental carpets like this one, which are so hard to find. These type of Persian carpets are extremely hard to make and as a result most oriental rug weavers will not even attempt to make them. Please feel free to look at other sites and stores and see for yourself just how rare Persian carpets like this Tabriz oriental rug is. Square Nain Persian rug in a large size, which is also a bit rare for oriental carpets. All of my Nain carpets are extremely fine and most have well over 500 kpsi. The high quality of this type of Nain rug is called 6-Lah, which refers to the numbers of fibers that make up one fringe in the Persian carpet. Although these are very fine Persian carpets, they are designed to be showpieces and also very durable.

Sample of Tabriz Persian rug Designs, Part 2
Tabriz "Gombad" rugs

Dear visitor,

I have added these pages to my website to show you some of the common designs in Tabriz Persian rugs.
Another very popular design in Persian Tabriz rugs is the "Gombad" pattern, which is also referred as the dome shaped design.  It is inspired by the inside ceilings of mosques, which typically feature colorful and star shaped ceilings.  This design comes in two different patterns and is especially sought after in round rugs, where the large round design works best.

Very high 60 raj quality Square Tabriz Persian rug featuring a Gombad design. This 8 foot sized Tabriz is rare in quality and size and is a perfect example of what a high quality Tabriz rug should look with the traditional Gombardeh design.A round Tabriz rug featuring the traditional Gombad design. This 8 foot Tabriz rug is a great example of what a high end Gombadeh Persian rug should look like and the colors are also a bit unique. One of my personal favorites is the large Tabriz from 2002 with a variation of the Gombad design known as Gombad Faraji. This design is extremely popular with my clients and it is one of the most difficult patterns to find in Persian rugs. This large round Tabriz rug also features the Gombad Faraji design and you can see how great it looks in a round Persian rug.

As you can see in the examples, the Gombad Tabriz rugs come in these two designs, which are very similar and yet have subtle differences. The two on the left feature a the main Gombad design and you can clearly make out the the colorful segments that point and circle around the medallion.  If you were standing in a center of large mosque and looked up at the ceiling, you would typically colorful tiles that are shaped very similar like in the left Tabriz rug and the center of the ceiling would have this star shaped circle.  This Gombad design is a fairly new in Tabriz carpets and has only been around for about 30 years, although it really became popular only in the last 10 years. The round Tabriz rug, second from the left, features the same original Gombad design, and as you can see, the pattern seems to be made for the round Tabriz rugs.
The two Tabriz rugs on the right feature a variation of the Gombad design, which is known as "Gombad Faraji". This variation is very rare and is not just one of my personal favorites, but apparently my client's as well.  Gombad Faraji Tabriz carpets feature typically shades of blue with a darker blue on the outside and the lighter as you move towards the center. Unlike the original Gombad design, there are no large colorful areas; instead there are diamond shaped that are larger one the outside and get smaller on the inside.  It almost resembles a bursting star. Both designs are ideally suited for round and square rugs, where the geometric design works best, but I have sold many in all shapes and sizes.

The quality of the Tabriz Gombad carpets typically start in the high end 50 Raj (~350 kpsi) and can go as high as 80 Raj (600+ kpsi) and I have not yet seen any in the lower quality range. Whereas the Tabriz Mahi rugs are very common and are made by many weavers, these Gombad pieces are only made by a small number of weavers due to the difficulty in the geometric pattern.  Considering that these are handmade rugs, it is very hard to create this large geometric design where proper shape and dimensions are an absolute most. Remember, the rug is made from one end to the next and the weaver has to be very skilled and careful to make sure that every piece is of the same size and shape, or else the pattern will not fit together.  This is one of the reasons why these Tabriz carpets are only offered in high end qualities and they tend to be a bit more expensive than other Tabriz rugs in the same size and quality range.

Below are some other examples of Persian rugs with the Gombad design and the top 3 pieces are actually pure silk Qom carpets that also feature this dome shaped pattern. It has become such a popular design, that other Persian rugs are starting to copy this pattern, but for the most part it is still only found in Tabriz rugs.

Square Pure silk Qom rug with a unique variation of the Gombardeh design, which is very popular with my clients and also very hard to find. The Gombardeh design has been copied by other Persian rugs as well, but this is a fairly new development. This pure silk Qom Persian rug features another unique variation of the Gombad design, which is the first one like it that I have seen. Due to their popularity, it would not be surprising to see other Persian rugs with the Gombadeh design appearing in the next few years. A smaller pure silk Qom rug with the more traditional looking Gombad pattern. As you can see in the colors, there can be a great deal of variety in the color and design combination in these types of Gombad Persian rugs. Large Tabriz Gombadeh with another slightly more geometric design variation of the popular Gombad design. As you can see by the straight white lines going across the center star, this Tabriz rug features more edgy shapes and less colors in the pattern. This very large round Tabriz Gombad rug measures 10 feet across and it is extremely rare to find these high quality Persian rugs with this design in this size. Typically, round Gombad Tabriz rugs are much smaller and the 6-7 foot range is the most common one. And finally, I wanted to showcase this oversized 10x13 Tabriz Gombad rug with the traditional design, but some unique color combinations. In particular, the olive green is very rare in Persian rugs and one of the nice features of the Gombad design is that the rugs tend be very colorful and the weavers often add colors that are not commonly seen.

I hope that you have enjoyed this article about the Tabriz Gombad rugs and feel free to look at my other featured rug designs and my website.  As always, I enjoy hearing my visitor's thoughts and experiences, so drop me a line or two if you like.

Take care,
