1. General Overview about Persian Rugs

A brief background about Persian rugs
Persian rugs have been around for hundreds of years and in fact date back as far as 2500 years if not longer. The oldest known Persian rug was discovered during an archaeological dig in the Pazyryk region in Siberia in the 1920's and given the workmanship that went into making this Persian rug, I have no doubt that there much have been older Persian rugs as well that have unfortunately not withstood the test of time.

Here is a picture of the discovered Pazyrik Persian rug and next to it is one of my new Persian rugs with the same design (in my case its a pure silk Qum rug).

Persian rugs have been around for centuries, but have taken on a global reach since the 20th century as people got more accustomed to traveling around the world and Persian rugs became more affordable and not solely owned by the wealthy few. Today, Persian rugs are readily available in all types of qualities, sizes and price ranges and are also copied and mass produced in countries like China, India and Pakistan. Since my specialty is in genuine handmade Persian rugs made in Iran, I will point out some of the features in the types of Persian rugs I offer and hope that this information is of help to you.

2. Tabriz Persian Rugs
Tabriz Persian rugs are among the best known Persian rugs and have been made for centuries. The city of Tabriz is the second largest city in Iran and is located in the northwest part of Iran and was a trading center on the ancient silk road that connected the Asian countries with Europe. As a result, the people in Tabriz became known for as tradesmen and the Tabriz Persian rugs were some of the most readily available Persian rugs throughout Europe.
One of the main differences between Tabriz Persian rugs and other Persian rugs is the large variety of designs, colors and qualities that is rarely ever found in other types of Persian rugs. Whereas most Persian rug weaving areas make rugs that are very similar, the Tabriz rugs are renowned for their different designs and I am fortunate to be able to offer pieces that are rarely ever offered by other rug dealers. Below are pictures with links to some of the most popular Tabriz Persian rug designs that I offer and each page features more information about them.

3. Qum Persian Rugs
Qum Persian rugs are also amongst the best known Persian rugs, but unlike most other types of Persian rugs are renowned for their pure silk quality. The city of Qom (also refered to as Qum) lies more in the center of Iran and like Tabriz has also been part of the silk road. Like the folks in Tabriz, the people in Qum have also been heavily influenced by the many different people and cultures that came with the trading of goods with other nations and this is also noticeable in the large variety of designs and colors in the rugs they weave. In addition, Qum is considered to be the religious center of Iran and you will often see reminders of that in the designs.
Going back to the start of the last century, the rug weavers in Qom became known for their pure silk Persian rugs, which are some of the finest Persian rugs in the world. While the weavers there also make regular wool rugs, it is the silk ones that can have up to 1000+ KPSI that make them some of the most valuable and sought-after Persian rugs. In addition, many Qum weavers will also add their signature to their rugs and this has become very common in Qum rugs. Due to the fact that many collectors like to hang the pure silk Qum Persian rugs on walls, many weavers also like to make the Qom rugs with pictorial designs and esspecially the hunting design has become one of their favorite patterns.
Below is the link to my informational pages that talks more the pure silk Qum Persian rugs as well as the hunting rugs and has also an important video that you might find helpful.

4. Nain Persian Rugs
Nain Persian rugs are another type of Persian rugs that have become very popular in the last few decades and especially the high end 6Lah Nain rugs are extremely popular with my clients.
Nain Persian rugs became popular after WW2 as prior to that Nain was a small city outside of Isfahan, which is close to the center of Iran. Prior to the war, Nain was a textile producing city and some of the weavers would for the larger rug producers in Isfahan. This is also why you will often see very similar designs and colors in the Nain and Isfahan Persian rugs. Up until the 50's, Nain was a very small city and it wasn't until the famous Habibian family started to make some of their masterpieces that people took notice of the Nain rugs.
The Nain Persian rugs come is many different qualities and while the majority are in the low quality 100-150 KPSI range, it is the high end 6Lah pieces that start at about 400 KPSI that have made them so popular with many collectors around the world. To give you a more in depth insight into Nain Persian rugs and especially explain the confusing details about the Nain Habibian rugs, please click on the link below and you will see my dedicated page about Nain Persian rugs and the video will also explain important facts about the Habibian rugs that you may want to know about.
