Notes: This Keshan rug is another antique rug that we have had in our family business for many years. My father used to have a personal fetish for very old rugs and this is one of those pieces. Now that he is finally retiring at the young age of 75, he has realized that he doesn't have enough room in his home, so I am able to offer this and another old rug. My specialty in is the new Tabriz rugs, but it is still very special to be able to showcase some of these pieces of art.
The biblical meaning in this Keshan rug is quiet obvious and the Keshan is approx. 100 years old. Made of pure vegetable dyes and wool, it was hung for many years and the rings are sown into the back of the rug for hanging. As one would expect, the fringes are pretty much worn out, and if you look at the close-ups, you can see how the colors have faded differently. In the old days, the vegetable dyes had to made by hand and then immediately mixed with the wool. Every batch of the same color would be very similar, but never perfectly the same and over the decades, some batches have released more of their oils than others, hence the difference in colors. If you are a collector of rare Persian rugs, you will know how special this rug is.
