GUIDE TO BUYING PERSIAN RUGS
Persian Rug Information, History,& Pictures
HOMEPAGE
Quality Service Uniqueness Value
Room size Persian Tabriz rug with a classical Gonbad or Gonbardeh design, which refers to the dome shaped design of the oriental carpet. This Persian carpet design is typically found in large oriental carpets and is a specialty of Tabriz rugs, even though it is sometimes found in other types of Persian carpets. It is one of the more modern design and very popular with my clients, who are looking for a durable showpiece Persian rug. Large room sized Nain Persian rug with a very unique design and very traditional Nain carpet colors. Nain rugs are made near and in the city of Isfahan and they come in various types of quality like most other Persian carpets. The Nain rugs that I feature are made of a very high quality and to have over 600 kpsi is not unusual. To begin with, all of my Nain oriental carpets are 6-lah quality and I always look for unique designs like this one. Another very unusual Persian carpet is this octagon Tabriz rug with a silk foundation and a 60 raj quality. Due to my personal passion for rare and unique oriental carpets, I always try to offer rugs that are different from what most other retailers sell in their stores. This Tabriz carpet was actually a twin set, but due to the large size I sold both carpets seperately. Finding octagon shaped Persian rugs is extremely rare and this twin set were the first ones that I have offered so far. Large square pure silk Qom Persian rug with a design featuring many different Oriental carpets. Square oriental rugs are rare and to round pure silk Persian carpets are extremely hard to find and are very valueable. This type of a Qom Persian rug often has over 700 kpsi and it made of the finest pure silk. Many of my clients like to buy the Qom oriental carpets for floors, but are also used for hanging on walls.

Showcase of "Pictorial Persian rugs"

Dear Visitor,
I have added these pages to my website to show you some of the common designs in Persian rugs.
When people talk of Persian rugs, the carpets that come to mind are regular shaped pieces with a medallion and some interesting designs, but there are also other types of rugs and one of the rarities are pictorial Persian rugs. Rugs depicting events or places have been around for centuries and are among the most valuable Persian carpets often seen at fine exhibitions and museums.
One of the comments that I often receive is about the quality of these picture rugs and the fact that many of them have stayed in such good condition for decades and sometimes even over centuries. Fact is that the picture are typically made of a high end quality, but the main reason why pictorial carpets last so long is that they are rarely ever walked on. Most of these rugs are either hang on walls or placed in little traffic areas, so there is virtually no wear and tear and the carpets can age gracefully.
The three areas of Iran that produce the vast majority or pictorial carpets are around Tabriz, Isfahan, and Qom. Due to the fact that most picture rugs are very detailed and are often made with silk and wool or just pure silk, they are most common in city rugs which use the fine Kurkwool (lamb wool) and silk. Tribal carpets typically use a much more coarse wool and rarely ever feature silk highlights, so the combination of the lower quality wool along with a thicker pile and much bigger knots (lower kpsi) means that when you see a picture carpet, it most likely came from one of the rug weaving cities. Here are some examples of fine pictorial Persian rugs:

One of my more unusual pictorial Persian carpets is this x-large Tabriz oriental rug with a 4 season design. This Tabriz rug design is actually very traditional and it depicts the different harvesting seasons along with some historical figures and buildings. Persian picture rugs tend to be much smaller and are like this Tabriz carpet made of a very high quality. Designed to be showpieces, these types of Persian carpets are often placed in low traffic areas and many picture rugs are also hang on walls. Large picture Qom Persian rug, which like all of my pure silk oriental carpets, is made with over 700 kpsi. It is very rare to see Qom hunting Persian rugs in the large size and in general picture oriental carpets are always much smaller. This is only the second Qom Persian rug with a picture in this large size and all of my other hunting carpets are much smaller. This picturial Isfahan Persian rug is a perfect example of what a high quality Isfahan oriental carpet should look like. The design features a floral picture with colors that are very rare in oriental carpets. Many of my oriental rugs are sold to clients all over the world and whether you are a local or overseas, the service will be to the highest standards and the best of my ability. Nain Persian rug with a design called a tree-of-life, which is very rare in high end 6-lah Naiin oriental carpets. As with all of my Nain rugs, this carpet has over 600 kpsi and is an extremely fine example of a true showpiece rug. The design is such that it is ideal for a formal area and some of my clients like to hang these picture carpets oon walls. Nain rugs tend to be very traditional in colors and design, so a Naiin carpet like this one is very different from the others.
This picturial Isfahan Persian rug is a perfect example of what a high quality Isfahan oriental carpet should look like. The design features a typical Omar Khayyam picture representing one of the old Persian stories. Many of my oriental rugs are sold to clients all over the world and whether you are a local or overseas, the service will be to the highest standards and the best of my ability. Small round Tabriz Persian carpet featuring a large picture of the ancient Persian empire. Round oriental rugs are also a bit of a challenge to find and to have a pictorial round Persian carpet is even more rare. Fortunately for me, my family knew the Persian rug weaver so after we purchased one of these type of round Tabriz carpets a couple of years ago, we asked him to make us another one and it is among my personal favorite round oriental rugs. A large almost square sized Tabriz Persian rug with a colorful picture design, which is much more common in smaller oriental carpets. Pictorial carpets like this one are often framed and tend to keep their value since they are rarely ever stepped on. Also, due to the fact that the pictorial oriental rugs are often very unique, they tend to sell faster and are much harder to replace than ordinary Persian carpets. This picturial Persian Isfahan rug is a perfect example of what a high quality Isfahan oriental carpet should look and feel like. The design features the 4 seasons pattern and as with all of the high end Isfahan oriental carpets that I offer, this picture rug is made with a silk foundation. Many of my Persian carpets are sold to clients all over the world and whether you are a local or overseas, the service will be to the highest standards. my clients like to purchase the Persian picture rugs like the Tabriz rugs and Isfahan oriental carpets for walls, and some even have them framed.

As you can see in the examples, pictorial rugs can come is a wide array of sizes, qualities, colors, and designs, but they are all typically high end Persian rugs. There are several types of picture carpets and the samples above show some of them. You will most often find the picture rugs depicting historical or religious places like ruins or mosques, social events like in the hunting scenes or the 4 season rugs, or simply people, plants, or animals. Some are also based on stories or poems and to see some writing along with a picture is not that uncommon.
Another group of pictorial rugs that are also very valuable and tend to be more of a personal matter for most collectors are the religious rugs depicting either events or people from certain religions. The most common pieces are the Tabriz Persian rugs and the pictures are based on Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Below are three examples of what typical religious oriental carpets could look like and they are almost always made with lots of silk perfect for hanging.

This Tabriz rug, which showcases different aspects of the Jewish Faith, is made on silk foundation and is extremely fine by Persian carpet standards. Most spiritual pictorial rugs tend to be of a very fine quality and they are designed to be either hang on walls or even framed. This almost square Tabriz Persian carpet also features a silk foundation and depicts the holy Moslem site of Mecca. As with many spiritual oriental rugs, it is made in a 60 raj quality and the details of the picture look just like a real picture. Here you see a Tabriz oriental rug that you have probably seen many times as a painting in just about every church throughout the world. The last supper portrait is one of most classic and recognized pictures refering to the Christian faith and it is also one of the most common religious rugs made in Tabriz. Again, very popular with my more religious clients, these Persian rugs are designed to be hang or even framed.

I hope that you have enjoyed this article about the Pictorial Persian carpets and feel free to look at my other featured rug designs and my website.  As always, I enjoy hearing my visitor's thoughts and experiences, so drop me a line or two if you like.

Take care,
