Showcase of Tabriz "Heriz" rugs

Dear Visitor,
I have added these pages to my website to show you some of the common designs in Tabriz Persian rugs.
In addition to the Mahi and Gombad design, the "Heriz" pattern is also very well known in Tabriz rugs, even though it is a design that originated outside of Tabriz.  The town of Heriz lies to the east of Tabriz in a mountainous region and the rugs that are produced there are classified as tribal rugs.  Some years ago, the Heriz design started to appear in Tabriz carpets which given the close proximity was not surprising, but the level of quality in the Tabriz Heriz rugs have really made them much more popular. Whereas before, the Heriz carpets were almost always of a lower quality, the Tabriz rugs have incorporated the design in much more high end pieces and have certainly added to their popularity.

Large square Tabriz Persian carpet with a geometric Heriz design, which is very hard to find in this size and among high end oriental rugs. Most high end Heriz Tabriz Persian rugs are made with very kurkwool and silk and it is very rare to find these type of oriental carpets in this square or other odd shaped size. They are often compared to Native American rugs due to their design and these Persian rugs are designed to be showpieces and last a lifetime. Among my featured Persian rug designs are the Tabriz Heriz oriental rugs, which feature a very geometric pattern very different from most other Persian carpets. The Heriz design comes from the region that is slightly to the northeast of Tabriz and gets it's influence from the Russian Kasak rugs. As you can see, there are no round edges in these Persian carpets to and especially the high end Tabriz oriental rugs with this design feature lots of silk highlights. The colors in this Persian rug design can vary and what you see here is a typical Heriz Tabriz Oriental carpet.
Another popular design in my Persian rug is the Tabriz Heriz oriental rugs, which feature a very geometric pattern very different from most other Persian carpets. As you can see, there are no round edges in these Persian carpets to and especially the high end Tabriz oriental rugs with this design feature lots of silk highlights. The colors in this Persian rug design can vary and what you see here is a typical Heriz Tabriz Oriental carpet with the very dark main color and lots of bright silk highlights. Persian carpets #11. Heriz designed Tabriz Persian carpets in a twin set, which is very hard to find in genuine handmade carpets. Twin Persian carpets are most popular in bedrooms and short hallways and make for great focal points.

As you can see in the examples, the Heriz design features a geometric pattern that is very different from the traditional looking Persian rugs. The straight lines and edgy design is heavily influenced by the Kazak rugs, which come from southern Azerbaijan, which lies just north of the northwestern part of Iran. The carpets that are made in the former Russian republic such as Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have very geometric designs and due to their proximity and closeness of the people, the pattern sort of wandered south and is now a very much associated with Iranian rugs. Unlike the Kazak and Heriz rugs, which are typically low quality tribal rugs, the Tabriz rugs have adopted this design and incorporated it into their high quality pieces.  As a result, it is possible to see high end Heriz Tabriz carpets in the 50 Raj (350kpsi), but are most common in the lower quality range. To find them in the higher quality range is extremely rare and and I can also assume a lack of demand for this.  The design itself has remained the same for many years and is centered around a large medallion like in the pictures above. Here, in the US, they are compared to the Native American rugs that also feature geometric patters similar to that of the Heriz design.  As a result, these Tabriz rugs are very popular with folks who are looking for a south-western look.

I hope that you have enjoyed this article about the Tabriz Heriz rugs and feel free to look at my other featured rug designs and my website.  As always, I enjoy hearing my visitor's thoughts and experiences, so drop me a line or two if you like.

Take care,

Mike Panah
